Kaizer Chiefs and Rwanda national team goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari has reportedly undergone shoulder surgery and is currently recovering in hospital. The 26-year-old is expected to be sidelined for an extended period as he begins his rehabilitation.
Rwandan media first reported the news earlier this week, confirming that Ntwari had been struggling with a persistent shoulder injury that required medical intervention. While initial reports indicated the surgery took place on Tuesday, further information suggests the operation was done a day earlier, on Monday.
Sources close to the situation revealed that the procedure was successful, but the recovery timeline may extend beyond the initially estimated two months. "Yeah, he has undergone surgery and it was successful. The operation was done on Monday, and he could be out until March," said a source familiar with the matter.
The insider added that Ntwari had been managing the injury for several weeks before deciding to proceed with surgery. "He got the injury a while ago and has been playing with it. It became necessary to sort it out properly, so he's now focusing on recovery," the source explained.
Ntwari joined Kaizer Chiefs at the start of last season and quickly established himself as Rwanda's first-choice goalkeeper. His consistent performances for both club and country earned him respect among fans and teammates. His absence will now pose a challenge for Chiefs, who are entering a critical stage of the Betway Premiership and preparing for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
The injury also affects Rwanda's national team plans as Ntwari has been an integral part of their squad. His leadership and reliability in goal have been key to their recent defensive stability.
Chiefs are expected to rely on their other goalkeepers, including Brandon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma, during Ntwari's absence. Both players have top-flight experience and will be tasked with maintaining the team's defensive standards in his absence.
Medical teams from both Kaizer Chiefs and the Rwandan Football Federation are closely monitoring Ntwari's rehabilitation. If recovery goes according to plan, he could return to full fitness by March, though no official confirmation has been made by the club.
Ntwari's successful surgery offers optimism for a strong comeback later in the season. For now, the focus remains on his recovery as Amakhosi continue their campaign without one of their key players between the posts.
