South Africa-based Malawi national football team captain and striker Frank Gabadinho Mhango has entered the race for the 2025 Betway Premiership golden boot award.
The Richards Bay striker netted his fourth goal of the campaign in a 1-1 draw with Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership match at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Tuesday night.
SuperSport website reported that Mhango levelled the match in the 77th minute after taking advantage of a rare attack late in the half, guiding the ball from close range following a pass from Lwandile Mabuya.
Mhango was substituted shortly after scoring the equaliser. The 33-year-old is three goals behind the leading scorer Junior Dion of Lamontville Golden Arrows.
Seluleko Mahlambi, Bradley Grobler and Iqraam Rayners are second with six goals each. Mhango is tied on four goals with Tashreeq Matthews, Hendrick Ekstein, Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya and Langelihle Phili.
Mhango expressed his delight with his performance. "It feels great to join the race for the golden boot award. Anything can happen but the league is very tough," he said.
He is just one goal short of equalling his tally from last Marumo Gallants.
The Rich Boys are 11th in the Betway Premiership with 13 points from 12 matches. Co-coach Ronnie Gabriel also praised Mhango's impact.
"We brought him to score goals and he has been doing so, leading the youngsters as well in terms of guiding them," he was quoted as saying on FARPost website.
Mhango made history when he won the golden boot award while playing for Orlando Pirates, sharing the accolade with Peter Shalulile after both scored 16 goals in 2020.
