Kaizer Chiefs are anxiously awaiting medical assessments on key forwards Khanyisa Mayo and Glodly Lilepo as they prepare for their Betway Premiership clash against Durban City on Friday at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Both players picked up injuries in recent fixtures, creating uncertainty over their availability for the important encounter.
Mayo suffered a hamstring injury during last week's league match against Stellenbosch FC, which forced him off the field early. Lilepo, who has been in strong form, sustained a knock in Sunday's 3-1 CAF Confederation Cup win over AS Simba at Dobsonville Stadium.
Coach Cedric Kaze addressed the media after the victory and revealed that the medical team would conduct assessments on Monday to determine the severity of Lilepo's injury. "We have to discuss with the doctor tomorrow, but it was a knock which I think shouldn't be very bad. If it was a muscular injury, it could have been another issue, but it's a knock. Probably one or two days, ice, and I hope he should be ready to go on Friday against Durban City," Kaze said.
The Burundian coach had confirmed before the Simba match that Mayo would miss the game due to his hamstring problem. He also shared updates on several other players who are still working their way back to full fitness. "The thing that we are sure of until now is that Mayo is out for this game after suffering a hamstring injury. We still need to manage Miguel, who we will assess today and tomorrow. Other than that, Ethan is still not fully fit. He started training with the group but without contact. Given has had one week of training with the group after almost six months out of the field. Mako as well is still unavailable, but the rest of the team is fine," Kaze said.
There was some positive news for Chiefs fans, with striker Flavio Silva nearing a full recovery after a long spell out. "Flavio Silva has been training with the group for the last 10 days, and we hope that he is good to go now," Kaze confirmed.
Both Mayo and Inacio Miguel missed Sunday's CAF fixture, but there is cautious optimism within the camp that they could return in time for Friday's league match. Chiefs' medical team will make a final call later in the week once all assessments are complete.
The timing of these injuries is crucial, as Chiefs have been building momentum after securing qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages for the first time in the club's history. Kaze and his technical team are determined to keep that rhythm going as they look to close the gap at the top of the league table.
Friday's clash against Durban City kicks off at 19h30 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, where Kaizer Chiefs will hope to have their full attacking lineup available to continue their strong run of form.
