Kaizer Chiefs are facing fresh injury worries ahead of their Premier Soccer League clash against Durban City, with key striker Glody Lilepo under a fitness cloud. The DR Congo forward sustained a knock during Sunday's CAF Confederation Cup win over AS Simba, leaving the Soweto giants concerned about his availability for Friday's match.
Chiefs coach Cedric Kaze offered an update on Lilepo's condition, stressing that the injury does not appear serious. "We will have to discuss with the doctor, but it was a knock which I think shouldn't be very bad. If it were a muscle injury, that would be another issue. If it's a knock, probably one or two days with ice; I think he should be ready to go on Friday against Durban City," Kaze told the media.
Lilepo played a pivotal role in the first half against Simba, scoring the third goal and assisting M. Ighodaro's strike, before being substituted for Pule Mmodi in the second half. His partnership with Ighodaro showed attacking promise, but the injury could disrupt Chiefs' attacking options.
Should Lilepo be unavailable, the technical bench may have to rely on Tashreeq Morris, who has fallen down the pecking order. Khanyisa Mayo remains a doubt after missing the Simba fixture, adding further uncertainty to Chiefs' forward line.
The Soweto giants will now shift focus to the PSL, aiming to maintain momentum after their historic qualification to the Confederation Cup group stage. They face Durban City at Orlando Stadium on Friday, with a kickoff time of 19:00. Chiefs will be hoping that Lilepo recovers in time to continue his fine form and keep their push for domestic points on track.
