Kaizer Chiefs striker Shaun Els has been named in the South African Under-17 squad for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, which kicks off on November 3. The 16-year-old striker is among 20 players selected by coach Vela Khumalo to represent the nation at the tournament.
Els, recently promoted to Chiefs' DDC team, has impressed in training camps and matches, earning praise from Khumalo, who previously coached him at the club level. "Yes, Shaun is part of the Under-17 World Cup squad. He has done very well in the short time that we have been having training camps, and that's why he is part of the team. I can't say whether he will be a starter at the tournament or not, as we have good strikers in the team and the competition is high, but at the moment he is part of the team," Khumalo said.
The striker is regarded as one of Chiefs' brightest prospects. Khumalo has tipped him as a future key player for the club, noting his technical ability, movement, and composure in front of goal despite limited time in the DDC setup.
Shaun Els will join teammates and rivals from South Africa as Amajimbos prepare to face a challenging group in Qatar. South Africa's group stage fixtures are:
