North West University

North West University Football Club, known as the NWU Eagles, are the football side of North-West University and compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The club won promotion to the professional game in June 2026 through the ABC Motsepe League national play-offs.

Promotion to the professional game

• 6 June 2026 - beat Mkhambathi FC 2-1 in the semi-final of the 2025/26 SAFA ABC Motsepe League national play-offs, securing promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship and a place in the national final.
• 7 June 2026 - lost the national final to Hope FC 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Mthatha Stadium. Both finalists had already earned promotion.

North West University earned their place on the field rather than by purchasing a status, becoming one of the few university sides in South African professional football.
