About Cape Town Spurs
Cape Town Spurs Football Club are a South African football club from Cape Town. Originally founded in 1970, the club spent two decades as Ajax Cape Town while owned by Dutch giants AFC Ajax, before reverting to its original name in 2020.
Cape Town Spurs club facts
- Founded: 11 January 1970
- Known as: Ajax Cape Town between 1999 and 2020
- City: Cape Town, Western Cape
Club history
- October 1998 - Cape Town Spurs merged with Seven Stars Football Club, with AFC Ajax of the Netherlands taking a majority shareholding. The merged club competed as Ajax Cape Town from January 1999.
- September 2020 - AFC Ajax sold its shares and the partnership ended. Under full local ownership the club reverted to its original name, Cape Town Spurs.
Note on our records: the 1998 merger and the 2020 rename were changes to one continuing club rather than status sales, so fixtures played as Ajax Cape Town belong to this same club record.
