Jomo Cosmos FC

Jomo Cosmos Football Club are a South African football club from Johannesburg, founded in 1983 by Jomo Sono. Long known as a producer of talent, the club earned the nickname Ezenkosi and has developed a remarkable number of players who went on to the top flight and the national team.

Club history

• 1982 - Jomo Sono ended his playing career in the United States, returned to South Africa and bought Highlands Park, the successful Johannesburg club founded in 1959.
• 1983 - the club was founded on the remnants of Highlands Park and competed as Dion Cosmos, combining the name of Highlands Park's former sponsor with a nod to Sono's old New York Cosmos side.
• 1984 - renamed Jomo Cosmos, the name the club has carried since.

Note on our records: Jomo Sono's 1982 purchase of Highlands Park transferred a league place between separate entities, so Jomo Cosmos' own history begins in 1983. The later Johannesburg club that also used the Highlands Park name is a different club again and is held separately.
