Cape Town City

Cape Town City Football Club, known as the Citizens, are a South African professional football club from Cape Town who compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The club was formed in 2016 by chairman John Comitis, who bought the Premier Soccer League status of Mpumalanga Black Aces and relocated it to the Western Cape.

Status history

• June 2016 - John Comitis acquired the Premier Soccer League franchise rights of Mpumalanga Black Aces from owners George and Mario Morfou. Black Aces were based in Nelspruit, and the top-flight place was relocated to Cape Town and rebranded as Cape Town City FC.
• 2024/25 - relegated from the Premiership through the promotion and relegation play-offs, ending nine seasons in the top flight. The club has competed in the Motsepe Foundation Championship since.

• Telkom Knockout: 2016, won in the club's debut season
• MTN 8: 2018, beating SuperSport United 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final

Note on our records: buying a status transfers a league place between two separate entities rather than renaming a club, so Cape Town City's own history begins in 2016. Records for Mpumalanga Black Aces, who competed as a Nelspruit club before the sale, are not held by Diski Zone.
